Gilmore worked as staff writer for the Chattanooga News Free Press before moving to Pasadena, CA.
She later earned her master's degree in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Upon receiving her bachelor's degree in History, she worked as a secretary at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She then studied at the University of Virginia where she worked as a reporter for the university's newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. during Susan's high-school years where she attended National Cathedral School.
Her mother, a painter, and father, a businessman, moved the family to Washington, D.C. Susan Gregg Gilmore, the youngest of four children, was born in 1961 in Nashville, Tennessee.
